Abstract : A survey of the progress made in high-precision geodetic linear measurement over the past years is given. Previously, most equipment for measurement used in geodetic work was supplied by foreign firms; now, Soviet instruments have been developed. Laser equipment is now popular since it can be used at any time of the day; there is still room for improvements in accuracy, and automation will play an ever-increasing role.
