Abstract : A dense aggregate (conglomerate) of metal particles has a developed reaction surface, but this surface is not equally accessible to the oxidizer. An oxidizer diffuses from the surface deep into the conglomerate through its pores, being expended in oxidation of the metal. Thus, for a solution to the ignition problem one needs a calculated determination of the effective rate of heat release which, in turn, depends on the areas of concentration of the oxidizer and the metal vapors within the conglomerate.
