Abstract : The paper presents a study of the transient flow of a compressible viscous gas around an elliptic cylinder which smoothly accelerates to a fixed velocity. The complete time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically in the body reference frame using a non-orthogonal time-dependent curvilinear coordinate system designed to describe the body exactly and to resolve the important features of the transient flow. The computation is performed in a fixed mesh which maps into a grid in physical space which evolves to accommodate the transient flow. (Author)
