Abstract : The vibrational temperature of N2 in the E and F regions of the atmosphere has been calculated. Excitation processes included O(singlet D) quenching by N2, N+NO, and electron-N2 collision. Loss processes included vibration-vibration exchange to CO2, vibration-translation energy transfer by oxygen atoms and diffusion. The Shimazaki-Keneshea code was used. The rate of dissociation of oxygen molecules was calculated including vibration-vibration and vibration-translation processes and comparison to experimental data was made. Chemiluminescence was observed for H+NO2, O+C2H4 and CO+OH systems in the visible and near infrared regions using a discharge flow system. The vibrational temperature of N2 was measured using an electron beam with and without CO. (Modified author abstract)
