Abstract : The attenuation and back-scattering of 2.36 and 0.63 micrometer laser radiation due to artificial fogs and smoke was studied experimentally. For these wavelengths the ratio of the attenuation coefficients is a linear function: (alpha (2.36) = K alpha (0.63). It is found that K = 1.18 for fogs having the most probable microphysical parameters, and that K = 0.4 for smoke under the same condition. It is shown experimentally that the geometrical factors in the experiment and the optical properties of the scattering medium have a greater effect on the intensity of the backscattered radiation than does the wavelength of the incident radiation.
