Abstract : The program is aimed at developing a rechargeable organic-electrolyte lithium battery to operate over the range -40 to +160F, have an energy density approaching 100 Whr/lb, a cycle life in excess of 500, and high charge retention. The approach is to use positive electrodes based on sulfur. Two parallel tasks are being carried out: Development of a soluble sulfur positive and of positives based on higher sulfides of transition metals, particularly of titanium and vanadium. Investigations have begun of the solubility of sulfur and lithium polysulfides in propylene carbonate, LiAlCl4 solutions and of the catalysis of their reduction. Studies were made with Ag, Au, C, and Pt electrodes. Niobium sulfide active material has been formed both electro-chemically and thermally. Charging was carried out in propylene carbonate solutions containing Na2S. (Modified author abstract)
