Abstract : The report presents the results of an experimental program which evaluates the scuffing resistance properties of a conventional (AISI 9310) and an advanced high hot hardness steel, Vasco-Jet 1000-2 (X2), gear material when various methods and finish levels are used. The program consists of two parts which are manufacture spur gears of AISI 9310 material using a Curtiss-Wright developed hydrostatic grinding machine for the final grinding operation, and manufacture spur gears of Vasco-Jet 1000-2 (X2) material with a wide range of surface finish levels. These levels ranged from honed of about 3 RMS to ground of 32 RMS. These gears were then all subjected to step load scuff tests. (Modified author abstract)
