Abstract : In the report the author investigates the problem of optimally controlling an M/G/1 queueing system by turning the server off and on. The basic idea is to balance the queueing system's running costs, customer holding costs, and the costs of starting the server up and shutting him down against a lower cost of maintaining the queueing system while the server is idle.
