Abstract : An adaptive antenna array suitable for rejecting undesired signals in a coded, digital communication system is described. The signal received by each array element is adjusted in amplitude and phase by an adaptive, feedback-control system designed to minimize the mean-square error between the array output and a reference signal. The received signal at the array output is waveform-processed to generate the required reference signal. This approach permits array adaption to occur simultaneously with data reception since the derived-reference signal contains an estimate of the unknown data modulation. Moreover, the allocation of transmitter power exclusively for the purpose of array pattern control is avoided. (Modified author abstract)
