Abstract : Regression analysis is a statistical technique used to estimate the empirical relationships that exist between variables. To use it, the researcher must first specify a model that postulates a causal relationship between a dependent and one or more independent variables. The independent (or explanatory) variables are postulated to cause changes in the magnitude of the independent variable. Regression analysis provides the estimates that quantify this relationship. The authors have specified two relationships. The first of these relates to inpatient care. The model specified is that the total expenses of operating inpatient facilities in a region are equal to some fixed costs plus an incremental cost that is a function of the capacity of that hospital. Similarly for outpatient care the model specified is that the total expenses for outpatient care in a medical region are equal to some fixed costs and a function of a measure of the capacity of the region to deliver outpatient visits.
