Abstract : This report describes in detail the calibration and application of the foil manganin alloy gage for monitoring dynamic one dimensional stresses in axially impacted rods. The total response of the gage is shown to have both a normal stress component and a plane strain component. Tests are described which determine the relationship between these components and the total response. Limits on the usable strain and stress ranges of the manganin gage are also listed. Using the manganin stress gage, dynamic stress-strain curves are found for borosilicate and soda lime glasses, South African black granite, and 7075-T6 aluminum. Strain rates as large as -1500/sec and loading times of 10 microseconds are used. Finally, the resulting dynamic elastic modules are compared with quasi-static values and dynamic values determined at small strain rates for those materials. (Modified author abstract)
