Abstract : The report describes experimental work done in measuring ultrasonic sound speeds and absorptions as a function of temperature in phenolic and polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ) polymers. Supplementing the ultrasonic measurements, specific volume and specific heat measurements were also made. The purpose of these measurements was to determine the effect of cross-linking on the macroscopic properties of polymers. Sound absorption was found to depend on degree of cross-linking so that absorption may be useful in monitoring or measuring degree of cross-linking, one of the important variables in determining the useful properties of thermosetting polymers. A transition is indicated in phenolic, but not PPQ. This transition leads to pronounced temperature dependence in many of the properties of phenolic.
