Abstract : The report displays the results of a seismic research program directed towards the development of a method of discriminating weapon recoil from shell burst. In order that the recoil versus shell burst question could be studied it was necessary to study the seismic radiation static firings of TNT, static firings of projectiles and impacting high explosive shells. It was also necessary to duplicate a recoil measurement made in 1971 to demonstrate the stability of the weapon plant, seismometer plant, instrumentation parameters, and propagation medium. After the above tests were made seismic discrimination was studied and three discriminants were developed. These involve the comparison of horizontal and vertical ground motion due to shell burst and recoil. (Author)
