Abstract : The problem of barodiffusion (the diffusion effect due to pressure gradients) in a binary mixture of incompressible, Newtonian fluids set in steady, laminar, axially symmetric motion by an infinite disk rotating with constant angular speed Omega about a normal axis, is considered. In such a flow the diffusion of individual species is brought about, in general, by three mechanisms, namely, concentration gradients, pressure gradients and temperature gradients. The object of this investigation is the small but significant separation of species due to pressure gradient in this configuration. The present study derives its motivation from the continuing interest in the basic fluid dynamic processes in the gas-centrifuge which is still regarded as a viable means of separating isotopic and other mixtures.
