Abstract : The report deals with the spectra and photochemistry of some benzenesulfonylhydrazones of salicylaldehyde and benzaldehyde which have been investigated in the crystalline state, in rigid glasses and in solution, in a variety of solvents over a range of temperatures and solute concentrations. Out of the compounds studied in the crystalline state, benzenesulfonylhydrazone of salicylaldehyde is found to be photochromic; this compound is also photo-colourable in rigid glasses at low temperatures. Photochromism is a property of the isolated molecule in an arbitrary rigid matrix involving proton transfer leading to quinoid type molecules. An attempt has been made to identify the coloured species in rigid glasses at room temperature by flash photolysis experiments. (Modified author abstract)
