Abstract : The application of neutron gauging to test for moisture content in bulk powdered foods and in canned Army field rations is described. A small californium-252 capsule, of approximate output 10,000,000 neutrons per sec, was used as a source. A brief discussion is presented on the basic principles of neutron interactions as relevant to moisture measurement and some background material is included on radioisotopic neutron sources.
