Abstract : Phenomenological arguments are given which result in the identification of Chapman-Jouget criteria with a corresponding thermal wave velocity/elastic wave velocity criteria in thermoelasticity. Inert gases and solids are then examined quantitatively, and it is shown that the introduction of exothermic effects can lead to the thermoelastic criteria being satisfied. Linearized exothermic perturbations are introduced into the thermoelastic equations, and those equations are analyzed. In particular it is shown that exothermic perturbations of inert weak shock solutions can lead to dramatic steepening of shock fronts in what appears to be the accepted transition region between explosive deflagration and detonation.
