Abstract : A glass-ceramic containing beta-spodumene crystals showed little decrease in fracture strength between liquid nitrogen temperature and room temperature, and the strength was not reduced by water in the surrounding air. Its delayed failure was less than that of other glasses and crystalline ceramics. These results are attributed to the low reactivity of beta-spodumene crystals with water. Reasons for this lower reactivity are discussed in terms of the structure of the crystals. (Author)
