Abstract : When finite element methods are applied to elastic problems, the essential kinematic variables are usually taken to be as continuous as possible. It is shown here that the restriction that beam slopes be continuous is not necessary. Four different models are considered and it is demonstrated that for a given number of degrees of freedom, models which allow discontinuous slopes give better results in the plastic range. (Author)
