Abstract : Thermostructural analyses for reentry vehicle nose tips of three-dimensional, orthogonally reinforced, pyrolyzed carbon-carbon materials generally have been performed with the assumption that the material is cylindrically orthotropic. Examination of the material's actual heterogeneous construction indicates noncylindrical orthotropy with a circumferential variation of properties in a plane normal to the billet axis. A technique is used which recognizes the actual noncylindrical orthotropic behavior of these carbon-carbons and which provides a consistent set of constitutive constants from test data. Analytical results are provided for a ring and a nose tip which indicate the cylindrically orthotropic assumption can lead to very unconservative predictions of critical stresses and strains.
