Abstract : An automatic target identification technique has been developed based on low frequency radar returns. The technique has been shown to be effective for a large variety of targets from simple shapes such as spheres and cubes to complex targets such as airplanes. The technique utilizes the radar returns at specific frequencies as a feature set. Reliable classification has been shown in the presence of considerable amounts of noise. The radar data used to demonstrate the above results have been obtained either experimentally or computationally. An imaging technique has also been developed which produced a synthetic image of the target from low frequency radar returns. The image, displayed on a CRT, is particularly useful for identifying unexpected targets such as may occur in space applications. (Author)
