Abstract : Chemiluminescence is observed when solutions of tetramethyl-1,2-dioxetane (1) are heated. Recent research has been direct toward elucidation of the mechanism of the chemiexcitation step which converts the exothermicity of decomposition of (1) into electronic excitation which then eventuates in light emission. The chemiluminescence from solutions of (1) can be employed as a powerful tool in the study of reaction mechanisms and can be used to develop novel and efficient chemiluminescent systems.
