Abstract : The paper investigates the intrinsic characteristics and associated attractive features and problem areas of the use of speech for man-to-computer as well as for computer-to-man communication. Among the attractive features of the use of speech for these purposes is its independence of the visual and manual communication channels, the ability to communicate simultaneously with man and machines, and the potential of using a telephone instrument as a complete computer terminal.
