Abstract : X-ray line broadening in powders of Co5Ce has been measured for particle sizes from 1.5 to 40 micrometers. The results are consistent with isotropic strain broadening; the strain increasing as the particle size is reduced. The combination of strain and high magnetocrystalline anisotropy is advanced as an explanation of the high coercive forces observed in the alloys. (Modified author abstract)
