Abstract : An analysis of rapid fracture in the double cantilever beam specimen has been developed and perfected as a fully dynamic treatment based on an energy balance. It provides the means of extracting the dynamic fracture energy expended during rapid crack propagation in this specimen. Substantial progress was also made in perfecting the test procedure through measurements of the stress intensity at crack arrest and the speed of propagation. This has enabled verification of the important predictions of the model. The resulting methodology has been applied to a comparison of the dynamic toughness of AISI4340 and O-1 tool steel and a study of the influence of microstructural features on the resistance to rapid crack propagation.
