Abstract : Any approach to the design of Swage Mandrels has been difficult for three reasons. First, the analysis of short cylinders is difficult. Second, it is nearly impossible to obtain accurate experimental results on mandrels. Third, the sintered tungsten carbide material is unreliable. The NASTRAN finite element program has made possible accurate analysis of the problem. Twelve different designs have been analyzed. These show how different geometries affect the stress distribution. They also show that a steel ball may be an inexpensive reliable swage mandrel. (Author)
