Abstract : The theory for an optical device to measure horizontal winds transverse to a path is reviewed. A system based on this theory which senses the wind-blown optical turbulence in the air is described. Experimental evaluation of this crosswind sensor using comparisons between the optically determined winds and mechanical anemometer measurements are discussed. Excellent similarity in the readings was found for a variety of atmospheric conditions. (Author)
