Abstract : There are different methods for the deposition of protective coatings made from refractory compounds on metals and nonmetallic materials. Coatings are applied from the liquid, solid or vapor phases; combined methods of deposition are used. The selection of a method is determined by the nature of the coating material and substrate, by the purpose for which the coating is designed and by the conditions of its operation. The Laboratory of Coatings of the Institute of Problems of the Study of Materials AS USSR in the course of the last ten years has been developing the technology. Boride, carbide, nitride and silicide diffusion coatings are described. Plasma and detonation methods are also discussed.
