Abstract : Soviet scientists discovered the phenomenon of ultralow friction of solids. The researchers observed that during irradiation of the surface of a polymer body, for example, of polyethylene rubbing with a metal in a vacuum, by a stream of accelerated helium atoms the transition from usual friction to ultralow friction is observed. Here, the value of the coefficient of friction reaches an order of thousandths. This effect was maintained in a wide range of velocities and large specific loads during the experiments. The authors believe that ultralow friction is caused by the fact that with the joint action of irradiation and friction a 'heating' of the surface defects occurs.
