Abstract : The national concern over the contribution of automotive emissions to air pollution has provided the impetus for the establishment of stringent emission control requirements. With this is the need to have available suitable instrumentation capable of monitoring exhaust emissions and insuring that pollution control devices are operating effectively. This study surveys the instrumentation available capable of monitoring exhaust emissions. Included are equipment types, their principles of operation, their operating characteristics, their sources, and their particular applications. Material relevant to emission measurement systems is generally covered. Development work on a simple colorimetric method of detecting carbon monoxide in automotive exhaust is carried out. Although a simple light emitting diode and phototransistor circuit performs well in detecting the reactions involved, complications to the system are threatened by a number of variables which have to be closely controlled.
