Abstract : Talc loses water when heated to 1100K: Mg3(Si2O5)2 OH to 3MgSiO3 + SiO2 + H2O. The only report in the literature on the kinetics of this reaction is inconsistent with the kinetics of dehydroxylation of similar clay materials. The authors reinvestigated the kinetics by means of isothermal thermogravimetry in the temperature range 1100-1160K. The dehydroxylation obeyed first-order kinetics for over ninety percent of the reaction. Activation parameters for the process are reported. The enthalpy of activation agrees well with the enthalpy required to break an magnesium-hydroxyl bond. (Modified author abstract)
