Abstract : Microscale characteristics of precipitation influence the nature and intensity of fading, but few usable statistics are available to the communication system designer. Although simultaneous transmission of orthogonally polarized signals can theoretically double the information-carrying capacity of the system (throughput), depolarization by precipitation and multipath may severely limit applications of this technique. The use of conventional space diversity or signal processing is not expected to provide the desired performance improvement during heavy rainfall, but route diversity may have this potential.
