Abstract : A theoretical model using elastic deviator, hydrodynamic spherical constitutive relation is employed to study the directional effect of shock Hugoniot of n-layered composites. It is assumed that the directional effect is due to the contribution of the deviatoric stresses. With these, the control-volume approach can be applied to obtain the governing equations for the shock Hugoniot. From the present theory, the Hugoniot of the composite may be calculated from the equations of state of its constituents. A SAMPLE CALCULATION USING Aluminum and C-7 Epoxy combination is performed. The results show that the Hugoniot in the direction of the layer has a large value compared with that in the direction normal to it, which is consistent with the measurements. (Author-PL)
