Abstract : Part I of the first phase of development of low friction coatings for icebreakers involved the evaluation of State-of-the-Art coatings available from industry. Laboratory simulation tests were conducted to determine materials' ability to withstand ice impact forces, abrasion resistance and scratch resistance as well as quantifying various frictional properties of the materials with varying ice properties: Several coatings were selected out of over 100 samples tested for application icebreakers. Part II of Phase I the coatings selected in Part I were applied to small icebreakers for initial full scale evaluation. Tests described and results discussed. (Author)
