Abstract : Aqueous mixtures containing ammonium nitrate and a combustion agent provide an easy means of controlling the volumetric concentration of explosive energy, making it possible to increase the extent and uniformity of shattering in hard rock blasting. Such explosives have a high density, can completely fill the cross-section of the bore hole and may contain TNT or other explosives, emulsified fuel oil, colloidal thickening agents, powdered light metals and various additives. A variety of fixed machines and mobile vehicles are used at mines in the USA and Canada to prepare, mix, transport, and charge these explosives. Due to their relatively high cost, aqueous explosive mixtures are most suitable for blasting very tough, saturated rock either underground or in open=pit work, where drilling costs are relatively great.
