Abstract : High speed steel tool tips were given different heat treatments to vary the microstructure, and the nature of the wear produced in turning tests was examined under the scanning electron microscope. Wear was mainly confined to either the rake face or clearance face, the form of wear being dependent on the particular heat treatment of the tool steel. The forms and mechanisms of tool wear are discussed in terms of the changes in microstructure produced by the different heat treatments.
