Abstract : The objective of this experiment was to test the validity of the DCPA Standard Method calculation of the fallout radiation protection afforded by core structures or shelters in basements where belowground interior partitions are involved. Gamma radiation measurements were made within the basement core of an experimental building which was located in a fallout field simulated with a circulating point source of cobalt 60. Data were converted to reduction factors (the ratio of the shielded exposure rate to the free field exposure rate) and compared the reduction factors calcuated using the DCPA Standard Method and two modifications of the Standard Method.
