Abstract : A study to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of utilizing the physical therapist as a primary care source for patients presenting with musculoskeletal complaints was done at two Army non-teaching hospitals. The study consisted of a base line phase and a study phase and similar data from both phases was analyzed to determine any significant differences. Each phase was approximately four weeks in duration and a total of 995 new back patients were evaluated during the study phase. The results indicated that effective care of acceptable quality was rendered in the study phase by the physical therapist but also indicated that an increase in personnel and space resources would be required in order to implement a screening program.
