Abstract : The work covered in this report is divided into two stages. First, in a study of magneto-acoustic wave interaction, mode locking of spin waves and parametric generation of acoustic waves were observed. Large oscillations in magneto-acoustic waves transmitted through YIG as a function of applied magnetic field were detected. The phenomenon was a result of acoustic Faraday rotation and can be used to build nonreciprocal acoustic devices. During the second stage, the author studied the use of gyrotropic and anisotropic materials for thin-film optical-waveguide applications. The principles governing polarization conversion in thin-film optical guides were elucidated, and experiments verifying the effects were performed. It was shown that, based on mode conversion, it should be possible to build a large class of thin-film devices for integrated optics, such as modulators, optical switches, gyrators, and isolators.
