Abstract : The first part of the final report is the prediction of transient surface temperature and heat flux by inverting the temperature response measured at an interior point of a solid material. The configuration considered is a semi-infinite slab, but the inversed solution for prediction of surface temperature and heat flux is shown applicable to a thick slab and hollow cylinder in a transient period for most gun barrel problems to within 5% of accuracy. A table of calibration for use of a foreign single thermocouple wire, with the other wire being the barrel material, is given for constantan, iron, chromel and alumel between 75 to 210 deg. F.
