Abstract : During the last 60 years adiabatic shear bands, primarily in the form of white etching bands in steels, have been noted after various processes involving high deformation rates. Although limited in the past, basic research into the phenomenon of adiabatic shear has received renewed interest in recent years. The review attempts to summarize and highlight the important properties of the microstructural by-products of adiabatic shear, mainly in steels, and also to outline the possible mechanisms of production of the bands.
