Abstract : Combustible gas detector and alarm units, manufactured by Jabez Burns and Sons, Inc., New York City, were installed on ten lifeboats at Coast Guard Lifeboat Stations along the East Coast to evaluate their practicability. The subject instruments employ a platinum wire exposed to the bilge gases; the presence of gasoline fumes causes an evolution of thermal energy at the surface of the platinum wire; this increases the temperature of the wire and hence its resistance; the change in resistance acts in an electrical circuit to cause an alarm.
