Abstract : Switching and modulation of laser light at 1.152 micrometer in magnetooptic waveguides of garnet films has been reported by Tien et al. In particular, they report modulation up to frequencies of 80 MHz and about 50% conversion of light between TE and TM waveguide modes over distances of about 8 mm achieved with a serpentine circuit carrying 0.5 ampere. No comprehensive theoretical analysis of such a device has yet appeared, and questions concerning the ultimate bandwidth, degree of miniaturization, electrical power requirements, and channel compatibility have remained unanswered. This report represents an initial attempt to answer some of these questions. Specifically, power requirements for reasonable film parameters and electrode configurations are considered. Crucial for the analysis described is the proposal of a model which can represent adequately the performance of magnetooptic waveguides and simultaneously be simple enough to be analytically tractable. The model used in the present study is delineated, a summary of the significant equations is presented, and the results and conclusions are summarized.
