Abstract : The active elements of many Navy sonar sources and hydrophones consist of one or more electrostrictive cylindrical shells. The performance of these transducers depends on the values of the piezoelectric coefficients (g sub 31, g sub 33, d sub 31, d sub 33). A method is presented for rapidly determining the piezoelectric constants (d sub 31, d sub 33, g sub 31, g sub 33) of an unprepared cylindrical shell polarized radially, axially, or circumferentially. Design considerations for a device which implements this method are discussed. (Modified author abstract)
