Abstract : The waxes extracted from the preen gland of the common loon (Gavia immer), were found to consist of esters of long chain aliphatic alcohols and long chain branched fatty acids. A hydrolysate of the wax yielded an alcohol fraction containing n-tetradecanol-1, n-pentadecanol-1, n-hexadecanol-1, n-heptadecanol-1, n-octadecanol-1, n-nonadecanol-1, n-eicosanol-1 and a number of branched chain aliphatic alcohols. The major component of the acid fraction of the hydrolysate was identified as 2,4,6-trimethyl nonanoic acid. (Author)
