Abstract : When lightning directly strikes the top of a support with cables, the total voltage acting on the insulation of the struck support can be expressed by a formula. From this expression it is evident that the inductance of the support is an unfavorable factor which increases the voltage on the insulation. The inductance can be reduced by using, for example, guy lines along or across the line. Guys distributed along the line should be especially effective since they simultaneously raise the coefficient of wire coupling. On the basis of the calculations performed it can be concluded that the inductance of the support with guys decreases by 20-30%.
