Abstract : A water surface sampler has been developed to collect the organic constituents of the air-water interface. A sheet of hydrophilic Teflon is used to adsorb polar, surface-active material from the water surface. The hydrophilic sheet will adsorb monomolecular films, and with repeated contracts multiple layers of organic constituents of the water surface are deposited. The adsorbed material is recovered for chemical analysis by solvent extraction. A floating cylinder is used for the 'in situ' determination of the concentration of film-forming organic material adsorbed at the air-water interface. (Modified author abstract)
