Abstract : An experimental program was undertaken to develop an air arc heater for potential use in the simulation of reentry aerodynamic heating. Conceptually the principle of the arc system studied differs from other arc heaters in that the working fluid is injected at or very close to the arc-electrode boundaries while the arc discharge column remains essentially unconfined. The problem areas studied consisted of power scale-up, while maintaining stable and reliable operation, use of uncontaminated air as the working fluid, and achieving a high degree of heat transfer effectiveness by maximizing the penetration of the working fluid into the column of a free-burning arc.
