Abstract : The objective of this study was to use computer simulation as an analytical aid in an attempt to reduce the time that patients waited for their prescriptions to be processed in the pharmacy at the Wright-Patterson AFB Medical Center. The pharmacy operation was observed and historical data concerning the pharmacy were obtained by the researchers to determine the pertinent random variables of the operation. SIMFIT II, a curve-fitting program, was used as an aid to determine the underlying distributions of the variables. GASP II, a simulation program, was used to model the pharmacy operation and to simulate the effects of changes to the operation. The computer model output included statistical data on the time that prescriptions spent in the system, the number of prescriptions in the various queues that formed, and utilization of pharmacy technicians. These computer model results were validated by consultations with pharmacy personnel. (Modified author abstract)
