Abstract : The modified ray theory which arises from use of the generalized WKB procedure based on Airy functions is investigated for inhomogeneous media having discontinuous properties. The modifications to ordinary ray theory which result are most significant for ordinary rays having angles in the vicinity of grazing or split-ray angles, angles of intromission, and critical angles. Properties of this frequency dependent theory are examined analytically and numerically for simple problems in underwater sound propagation corresponding to (1) a discontinuous sound velocity gradient somewhere within the water column, and (2) a homogeneous ocean bottom interfaced with an inhomogeneous water column.
